How do I renew my CA CNA license?

California CNAs need 48 hours of continuing education every 2 years to renew their license. A maximum of 24 of the 48 hours may be taken online (the rest need to be in a live setting). They can not take more than 12 hours of training per day.

Q. How long does it take to process CNA renewal in California?

A. The California Department of Public Health processes applications in the order they are received. Electronic Submissions take up to 30 days to process and Mailed Submissions take up to 45 days.

Q. What happens if my CNA license expires in California?

A. If your certificate has not been expired for more than 2 years, you may reactivate the certificate by taking the Competency Evaluation examination. To reactivate the CNA certificate, just submit the Renewal Application (CDPH 283C), checking the “yes” box for question number 6 in the “Reactivation” section.

Q. My CA CNA certificate has been expired for more than 2 years, how do I get recertified?

A. If your certificate has been expired more than 2 years you must re-train through a CDPH-approved CNA training program. You must submit an Initial Application (CDPH 283B) and the Request for Live Scan Service (BCIA 8016) form. After completing the training program, you will need to pass the Competency Evaluation.

Q. What if a California CNA can't complete the renewal requirements?

A. If you can't complete the renewal requirements and your certificate hasn't been expired for more than 2 years, you can reactivate the certificate by taking the Competency Evaluation. Just submit the completed Renewal Application (CDPH 283C), and check the “yes” box for question number 6 in the “Reactivation” section.
