HIPAA Rules and Regulations

Course Summary

This module is intended to provide health care professionals with information about HIPAA and to inform health care professionals about what they need to know and do to be HIPAA compliant. The three components of HIPAA will be discussed: privacy, security and administrative simplification. Privacy, security and administrative simplification are all interdependent but are designed to be used together to protect patient privacy. The health care professional’s responsibility in the busy workplace is to secure and protect PHI. Knowing who you are giving information to and whether they have a legitimate need to receive protected health information are important strategies to protecting PHI. There are administrative, physical and technical safeguards that need to be followed to ensure the proper handling of PHI and protocols to follow if PHI has been compromised. Following the rules of HIPPA (which are outlined in the courses below) will help ensure compliance and help protect the privacy of all protected health information.
